INSIDER SCOOP: Few Pinots have captured the imagination (a.k.a. obsession) of avid wine collectors like Sea Smoke, so when their winemaker’s parents stopped by Porthos with their new Pinots, we cleared our calendars! Made by them and Sea Smoke’s original winemaker Kris Curran from fruit from the uber-famous Fiddlestix vineyard in Santa Barbara, Ampelos Fiddlestix Pinot Noir is your chance to get in on the ground floor of this winery’s meteoric rise and at a fraction of what other Pinots with this pedigree sell for.

NOTE: The Wine Spectator rated this vintage “Outstanding 92” points: {called Lambda sourced from Estate vineyards}
Aromas and flavors of loamy earth, blueberry and wild berry are tight, focused and concentrated, gaining depth and richness. This ends tightly wound in a good way. Better than previously reviewed. Best from 2010 through 2015.

RECOMMENDED FOOD PAIRINGS:
Grilled Tuna steaks with pink peppercorn, cilantro, and lemon olive oil
Herb roasted chicken with sweet cherry tomatoes and basil
Cow’s milk D’affinois cheese

BACKGROUND: A love of wine, the Santa Barbara County wine community and serendipity led Rebecca and Peter Work to a piece of property in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills, which they purchased in 1999 with the idea of someday planting a vineyard. Rebecca and Peter were still toiling long hours in corporate America, spending countless hours on planes and in conferences, but still enjoying the thrill of business. With little time to focus on the vineyard, they still decided to move forward with the project and son Don, Sea Smoke’s current winemaker, moved to the valley to spearhead the effort. The first 15 acres of vines were planted in 2001. Fate intervened a few months later, when Rebecca and Peter landed in JFK airport the morning of September 11, 2001. They decided then and there to get back to the land, spend more time with family and enjoy life to the fullest. Corporate life was left behind. Don’s wife Lindsay joined the team, and Ampelos Cellars was born. They’ve since hired on Sea Smoke’s founding winemaker Kris Curran as consulting winemaker to work with them to produce the best terroir driven Pinots from the Santa Rita Hills.
