INSIDER SCOOP: Rare, micro-production wine (less than 300 cases) WINEMAKER NOTES: “Our home ranch sits high atop the Vaca mountains, overlooking the Napa Valley. This small two-acre vineyard below our home sits in an idyllic locale on the edge of a steep canyon hillside, and is surrounded by old growth forests. It is exposed to a constant warm sun all day long, with cooling ocean breezes sifting across the canyon during the night. The rootstock, the minimal use of irrigation, the composition of the soil, and the micro weather patterns all contribute to the uniqueness and personality of the fruit. The quality of our parsimonious crop in 2004 surpassed my expectations and the ‘purist’ in me insisted that it be bottled on its own. I was so enthralled with the maturing of this wine over the past two and a half years, that we bottled it as a vineyard designate Cabernet Sauvignon, entitled ‘Cloudy’s Vineyard’, a nickname since youth (‘head in the clouds’ miscreant that I was…). The wine exposes a bolder, firmer, more masculine character to it, typical of mountain grown fruit. It is a lush and deep wine - with a purity of Cabernet Sauvignon to its core.” – Claus Janzen, winemaker
