Gosset Grand Millesime Brut 1999 - $99.00

TASTING NOTES:
Flowing, pure and elegant….the rich, full taste seems to alternate between the lacy delicate influence of Chardonnay and the strength of the Pinot Noir. The taste is beautifully balanced with a round, lively, complex, diverse flavor and a smooth sparkle. This is a champagne that successfully combines the delicious flavor of melted butter, toasted almonds and poached pear, quince jelly and apricot jam, lemon verbena tea and vanilla, toasted bread and mocha coffee, fudge and amber rum. Wonderfully fresh, amazingly intense and long on the finish. The finish shows just the right amount of fruit with engaging scents of candied lemon zest and toasted brioche for a sensational finale. Enjoy now through 2010.

RECOMMENDED FOOD PAIRING:

  • Roasted Lobster with lemon butter sauce

  • Cheese pastry ''Gougère'' with wild mushrooms

  • Goat's cheese and potato tart

HISTORY:
In 1584 Pierre Gosset, alderman of Aÿ (located near Epernay in the Champagne region of France) and wine-grower, made still, mostly red, wines from the grapes he harvested from his own vines. In those days, two wines vied for pride of place at the table of the Kings of France : the wine of Aÿ and, from some hundreds of miles further South, the wine of Beaune. Both were made from the same grape varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The reputation of the wine of Aÿ was such that King François the First had his own winery built there, which is now owned by Champagne Gosset. Then, in the 18th century the wine made in and around Aÿ began to bubble, and the Gosset family turned naturally to the production of champagne.

At Gosset, part of the wine-making process takes place in wooden vats for the cuvées presented in the old-style bottle. No malolactic fermentation is permitted, in order to preserve the fine malic acid that retains the naturally fruity aroma of the wines.

FUN FACT:
We call Gosset the "undiscovered, boutique Dom Perignon". Champagne Gosset is the oldest champagne winemaker: Aÿ 1584. Today, the vineyards of Gosset are located next to the most famous (and expensive) 'big name' Champagne in the world but since this bubbly is still relatively undiscovered the vintage prices are still relatively sane compared to neighbors Dom Perignon and Cristal.
