Martinelli Zinfandel Martinelli Valley 2021 (Auction Lot 44)
Details
Winemaker Notes
“Martinelli Valley Zinfandel starts with aromas of Sana’a Rosa plum, toasted almond and white pepper. The ripe plum entry lead to fresh raspberry mid-palate with a balanced acidity that lasts all the way to the fresh stone fruit finish.” - Courtney Wagoner
Background
The “Martinelli Valley Zinfandel” barrel auction lot is the very first time Zinfandel grapes from all of the Martinelli estate vineyards on Martinelli Road have been blended together. Lee Martinelli Sr. coined the term “Martinelli Valley” to describe the area where Martinelli Road runs through the bottom of the valley with the vineyards gracing the hillsides above. Martinelli Zinfandels are usually made as vineyard designates but this barrel lot is made with fruit from Jackass Vineyard, Jackass Hill, Lolita Ranch and Vellutini Ranch.
Martinelli’s vineyards have been farmed by their family since the 1880s and multiple generations of the family still live in “Martinelli Valley.” Some of the fruit in this barrel lot is from 135-year-old vines and Lee Sr. still farms them himself at 82 years old, like his father and grandfather did before him. Jackass Hill is the steepest, non-terraced vineyard in California and the “Martinelli Valley Zinfandel” barrel lot includes grapes from that vineyard.
