“The new Opus One 2023 is an exceptionally serious, Bordeaux-inspired vintage - - bright, lifted and magnificently structured, with the ultra-firm tannins and elevated texture of a young Chateau Lafite - - but pure Napa joy at its core!
An alluring bouquet of blackberry, black plum, crushed herbs and graphite introduces layers of crunchy dark red fruit, mineral intensity and remarkable freshness. Similar to the elite Cabernet from Napa’s heralded 2023 vintage, this Opus is a wine of profound concentration and classical proportions; perhaps the most age-worthy vintage in the estate’s history upon release. It reminds us of the superb 2010 vintage we judged recently (next to 2010 Mouton Rothschild), although we suspect the 2023 may ultimately become even more impressive with 15–20 years of evolution. Savvy collectors certainly do not need to wait that long to open their first bottle. Pop a cork now, decant it for at least 30–60 minutes, and serve it alongside a juicy filet mignon, herb-crusted rack of lamb or a rich portobello mushroom risotto. The wine’s freshness and firm structure will dazzle at the dinner table. Our early estimate: 98 points now but predict a 100 point potential as it enters its prime over the coming decade.” - California Wine Advisors (7/21/26)

“Florid with cassis and plum notes, this is succulent but tight in feel right now as the long, iron-accented structure runs from start to finish, giving an ample matrix for support. Displays floral lift, which helps to pull this along energetically. It was hard to miss the board in this vintage, but even still, hitting the bullseye is never easy. This just may surpass the levels hit in 2005, 2013, 2016 and 2018. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec.” - Wine Spectator

“The 2023 Opus One is a super classic wine. Brisk acids, fine tannins and lifted aromatics signal an Opus One of exquisite finesse and class. Red/purplish fruit, mint, orange peel and chalk are all woven together in a fabric of nearly indescribable class. The 2023 floats on the palate with understated finesse and lightness, but it’s not light in any way. This is class personified.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“Another absolute gorgeous wine from this team, the 2023 Opus One offers up cassis, black raspberries, spicy wood, flowers, and graphite in a beautifully layered, complex, nuanced bouquet. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a pure, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and integrated acidity, this ultra-classic, elegant Opus One will keep for 30-40 years. It’s at the same level as the 2010, 2016, and 2021. Drink 2025-2065.” - Jeb Dunnuck
